Congenital Torticollis in a 20-Day-Old Infant
Background
A mother brought in her 20-day-old son for treatment of congenital torticollis. (AKA wryneck - is a condition present at or shortly after birth where an infant’s neck muscle is shortened and tight.) At the initial assessment, the difference in cervical rotation measured approximately 9 cm.
Treatment Course
The infant was treated once to twice weekly for 30 minutes per session, over 8 weeks. By the end of this course, the rotational difference had decreased from 9 cm to just 1 cm - avoiding the need for the sternocleidomastoid muscle tenectomy surgery that had been on the table. The remaining 1 cm difference was resolved through a series of neck stretches with a physiotherapist.
Follow-Up
I saw the boy again at age three. His neck rotation was completely normal.
